The Enugu State Government said officers in the ministry of Justice had commenced training in law reporting to enhance justice delivery and achieve its Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
The one-day training for officers in the law reporting Department of the Ministry was organised by the office of the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in collaboration with the President of the Enugu State Customary Court of Appeal.
Speaking during the training, the Director, Law Reporting and Revision, Mr. N. N Anya, said that justice delivery would be enhanced if the laws and proceedings were reported correctly.
The Director regretted that the department had been comatose over the years, but added that with the pursuit for optimal performance by the Governor Peter Mbah’s administration and the corresponding stride of the Attorney General, the department would soon start regular publishing of law reports of the judgements of the State High Court.
Anya appealed to the Commissioner to secure funds and other resources to enable the department discharge its mandate.
The Lead Resource Person, T.S. Ugwuja, of the Customary Court of Appeal, commended the Attorney-General for the synergy and mutual working relationship between the Ministry of Justice and the Customary Court of Appeal, noting that the synergy will bring about speedy dispensation of justice in the state.
Ugwuja stated that the training will be a continuous process since the skill for reporting judgement is acquired over time through continuous learning and practice. He applauded the Commissioner for training staff of the ministry.
Some of the papers delivered at the training included:
1. Importance of accurate law reporting,
2. Enhancing skills across the law reporting processes
3. Advancing law reporting through the collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and the Courts.
Ugwuja implored the law officers to ensure that the lessons learned during the training were effectively implemented to contribute to optimal justice delivery, through accurate and comprehensive law reporting.
At the end of the training, Barr. Ify Ik-Obi, on behalf of the Hon.Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, thanked the Resource person and his team for the training.
