The water scarcity in Enugu State is over as Gov. Peter Mbah, is set to inaugurate 24/7 9th Mile Water Production, Aka Eze Aka, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, has announced.
Aka, who was speaking on a radio programme on Wednesday in Enugu, said Enugu had started providing twice the water need of the people, stressing that government water tankers would cease to operate by Friday.
From the radio programme, the Commissioner moved straight to the site to ensure that the ground was set ahead of the inauguration.
According to the Commissioner, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, will on Saturday this week inaugurate the water production.
He added that the state now had capacity to generate 120 million cubic litres of water enough for its people.
"With few days to 180 days, water is running everywhere, saying this is what no government has achieved in Nigeria, especially, in the southeast region.
"Before now, Enugu was operating at 45 per cent capacity, there was basically no need for storage as the state barely have enough water to last all through the year, but today, it is a different story as the state can boast of water supply to every part of the state.
"Water galleries had been built for those who may not have access to water due to structural problems," he said.
To surmount all issues that were likely to jeopardize efforts geared towards providing and sustaining the supply of portable water, the Commissioner, said the state was set to build 80 million cubic liters capacity as buffer to prevent failure or break down of any pump.
"Enugu is now providing twice the water need of its people and the pressure is so high and needs to be controlled.
"Those who complain they are yet to get water should ask well, water is in Enugu city," he reiterated.
Recall that government had directed estate owners and developers in the state capital, comprising Enugu North, South and East Local Government Areas, to liaise with the State Ministry of Water Resources on the new water pipes specification.
This, the government, said would be able to withstand the daily pressure of the over 60 million litres of water to be released by the state government before the end of November.
It equally advised residents to start replacing their old polyvinyl chloride (PVC) water pipes with the Polyethylene of Raised Temperature Resistance (PE-RT) water pipes, which were not only suitable for the environment but also modern, non-corrosive and pressure resistant.
It was in view of the high pressure and volume of water that would be flowing across the capital in the next couple of days.
The government noted that most of the existing pipes in the state, which connected water to various buildings had already outlived their lifespan and would wreak havoc if not replaced.
The government further said that residents who refused to comply with the advice risk not having access to water supply as the water might be lost on transit due to the damaged PVC pipes.
It assured that the 180 days Governor Peter Mbah administration had promised to make water available to residents in the capital would not be compromised as works were at the verge of completion.
