The Queens School Enugu Old Girls Association (QSEOGA), has vowed to bring back its alma mater, Queens School, Enugu to its past glory by restoring dilapidated structures and building hope for the younger generation.
The association made the promise during its 70th Anniversary and Convention held on Sunday in Enugu with the theme: 70 Years of Impact and Growth: Embracing Future Possibilities and Smart School Initiative”.
Speaking at the anniversary, the National President, QSEOGA, Mrs Ifeanyi Egbunike, said that the current state of the school was undesirable noting that it needed urgent intervention from members and others.
According to her, the school in all its ramifications is now a shadow of its past as what used to be pride for them has gradually disappeared to become a desolate land.
“An institution of higher learning that was once a masterpiece for excellence is now a caricature of itself,” Egbunike said.
She, however, called on the members of the association to pull their resources together to transform and develop the school for current students and ones to come.
While appreciating QSEOGA for being instrumental to the development of the school over the years, the national president appealed for more support and contributions in rebuilding the structures and walls of the school.
Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State in a message to the event noted that Queens School Enugu had not only involved in academic excellence but a beacon of culture, discipline and leadership.
Mbah, represented by the State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Enih, said the journey of 70 years that began with just 30 students had produced great persons who were contributing great things in the society.
“It is inspiring to see how QSE has transformed from a small boarding school into one of the most revered institution in Nigeria.
“Today, the school achievements on academics, dance, drama and other extra curricular activities have continued to serve as the shinning example to other schools across the country,” Mbah said.
The governor added that the theme for the celebration resonated deeply with his vision for education in Enugu State through Smart initiative, stressing that the future belonged to those who innovate and embraced change.
He urged the association to continue making impact for the growth and development of the school.
In a remark, the Chairman of the event, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, while noting that the school was not same as it were in 1980s, urged the association to make it a centre for academic excellence.
Nnamani, who is the Secretary, Police Service Commission said that this would be achieved through training of teachers and motivating them to give their best to students.
“The fundraising you are looking for can come from your members if they are determined to give back to their alma mater and through right partnerships,’ he advised
Delivering her keynote address, a member of the association, Dr Ifeyinwa Nwakwesi, called for modification of parenting skills and educational curriculum to include basic knowledge and strategies that guided the students.
According to her, certificates and degrees are important stepping stones to success but do not guarantee true success and that we need to teach children early in life about commitment to the growth mindset.
Earlier in her opening speech, the Enugu Chairperson and Host, QSEOGA, Mrs Maureen Atuonwu, disclosed that the school was founded 70 years ago on principles of excellence, resilience and empowerment.
She said that the convention was not just about celebration but an opportunity for members to reconnect, reminisce about their school days to foster new friendships.
“As we celebrate 70 years of Queens School Enugu, let us recommit ourselves to the values that brought us here. Together we can make a difference in the lives of fellow alumni and future of our school.
“Let us reflect on the remarkable journey of Queens School Enugu, a journey marked by triumphs, challenges and enduring spirit of sisterhood,” she said.
The event featured QSEOGA’s Annual General Meeting, election of new executive with Dr Ann Njoku-Amugo emerging QSEOGA’s National President, Gala Night and Award, health walk, dance and merriment. (NAN)

Rangers FC was a reincarnated spirit of Igbo-man, that of course was the reason Rangers took over the football sphere in Nigeria shortly after it was founded in early 70's.
