The Enugu State Government has reconstituted Ohuani neighbourhood watch to ensure the safety of lives and property in the area.
Ohuani-Amagunze autonomous community is in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The State Commissioner For Ministry of Human Development And Poverty Eradication, Dr Malachy Agbo,
who reconstituted the body, on behalf of the governor, said the neighbourhood watch was established in the true spirit of community policing.
According to him, they will be working in synergy with security agencies to check criminal activities in the communities.
Represented by the Director, Neighbourhood watch in Enugu State, Mr Uchenna Ozomgbachi, the commissioner charged the vigilance group to operate within the ambits of the law.
He also warned them to ensure that they did not harass or intimidate members of the community in the course of their duties.
The Commissioner noted that the state government, specifically established the neighborhood watch to ensure that all communities and councils in the state were secured and properly policed.
He tasked the town union of the community to provide them with the basic materials needed to facilitate their operations, urging the group to imbibe due process and transparency in managing every fund donated to them for sustenance of security in their community.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Nkanu East Division, Mr Moses Asogwa, while reiterating the interconnectedness of neighborhood watch members and the police in protecting the lives of the citizens, admonished members of the group to abide by the tenants of the law guiding them.
For the Commander, Neighbourhood Watch, Nkanu East council area, Mr Alphonsus Anayochukwu, members of the association should be of good example and ensure they maintained the rules.
While presenting some security gadgets, including motorcycles, to the newly reconstituted group, the President General of Ohuani Amagunze autonomous community, Captain Anthony Anioma, said he was working in tandem with Governor Peter Mbah's policy to activate secure and prosperous state where investors would feel safe to establish their businesses.
He stated,”we are having problems in our forests, and all those criminals that normally use guns to harass some of our members, we want them to handle it and make sure they control everything that's happening in our community.
"That is why we gave them machines and other things so that they can be able to control everywhere."
For the immediate past president general of the community, Ozo Francis Omaga-Nnamani, said Ohuani community valued the security of its people, which was the reason the leadership of the town was investing a lot to have a robust and equipped security team to maintain peace and tranquillity.
He eulogized the current president general of the community led by Captain Anthony Anioma, for his exemplary leadership, urging the newly reconstituted neighborhood watch members to respect the rules of law.
The neighbourhood watch which was established in 2006 with renewable period of three years, is tasked with the responsibility of securing communities and ensuring peace at the grassroots.
The event attracted heads of different security agencies in Nkanu East Local Government Area, including the Commander, Forest Guard, Mr. Chinenye Nwobodo.
