The Enugu State Government says it will henceforth organize regular quiz competitions among nursery, primary and post-primary school pupils and students to promote Igbo language, culture and tradition in the state.
The state’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, said this during the commemoration of the 2024 International Mother Language Day held in Enugu on Wednesday.
The commemoration was organized by Igbo Efula and the Centre for (Igbo) Memories.
Madueke also said that her ministry would also go ahead to print Igbo calendars to also promote Igbo language and tradition.
“A calendar that will have the four market days and the normal seven range of four market days that make-up the 28 days in Igbo calendar.
“It will be made of more informative and educational pictures and write-ups on Igbo language and culture for our children to learn,” she said.
The commissioner said that her ministry would also use other platforms and programmes within its limited resources to keep promoting Igbo language and culture within social gatherings and public places.
“I must commend the organizers of this event as well as everyone working hard to promote Igbo language, culture and tradition within the state,” she added.
In a goodwill message, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, said that the organization had put in place mechanism to ensure every child of Igbo extraction not just understand Igbo language, but can read, write, tell Igbo proverbs/idioms.
Iwuanyanwu, who was represented by Chief Alex Ogbonna, appreciated the organizers, adding that the organisation would continue to support groups and foundations that promote Igbo language and culture within and outside Nigeria.
Prof. Uzodinma Nwala, Founder of Alaigbo Development Foundation, tasked all families, Igbo-based institutions and communities to start early to teach Igbo language and carry along children and wards in all aspects of Igbo culture, tradition and civilization.
Nwala, who is also an emeritus professor of philosophy, noted that the event was apt and a veritable one to ensure that Igbo language, culture, tradition and civilization would never go extinct.
Earlier, Mazi Bismarck Oji, Coordinator of Igbo Efula, encouraged mothers to be in the fore-front of teaching Igbo language at home, adding that it should start while the child is in the womb.
Oji said that it had become critical as mothers and women spend more time with children at home, adding that they should focus on speaking Igbo language and ensure that children clearly understood the language from cradle.
Highpoints of the event included: award to three personalities that have promoted Igbo language in Enugu State; competition among secondary school students on Igbo spelling and proverbs as well as entertainment by Igbo Dance Academy.

Posted on Sep 07, 2024 at 01:48 PMEthical Leadership Centre, Enugu recognising visionary leadership is certainly a milestone towards 'making excellence the norm'. Big thanks to Chief Ben Etiaba for his tireless effort to improve our society and it's pillars.
Posted on Sep 10, 2024 at 09:51 AMYes Rangers! Our darling team was the hope of everyone across the niger to get thrilled and be happy. Rangers was the binding wire that bound the faith of the IGBO MAN together. Because the Igbos does not believe in anybody, rather the Igbo-man believes in self and God. He believes in what he can do for himself and others. Otherwise, how could a people in a war situation be cut off from outside world, they were not getting relief materials from the world bodies, no ammunition and the rest, and things got most trying and difficult. But in such horrible state of life, the IGBO-MAN produce the great bomb fondly called (Ojukwu bucket or Ogbunigwe) that destroys and kills in multiple folds, produced fighter jets which they used during the war, the Igbo-man produced his own fuel both for aviation and automotive uses. The Igbo-man started live again after the war with just twenty pounds only and excelled beyond imagination. Rangers FC was a reincarnated spirit of Igbo-man, that of course was the reason Rangers took over the football sphere in Nigeria shortly after it was founded in early 70's. Well let me come back before I go adrift Rangers International FC. I appreciate my brother Chief Ben Etiaba "Ifennia" founder Ethical Leadership Center Enugu, for the good job he is doing , especially in fishing out our men and women of substance who has paid their dues in their different callings and honouring them duly. Finally, my Congratulations goes to Dr. Joseph Ugboaja the Chief Medical Director Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi for his milestone achievement so far at NAUTH. I also congratulate the young enterprising Director of Rangers management board chief Ugboaku for his visionary leadership and achievements. God bless you all, and let the flame keep burning!
