The joy and excitement of the people of Enugu can easily be felt as they talk about the return of public water supply to the state, thanks to the rare fulfilment of Governor Peter Mbah's electoral promise to remove the burden of access to potable water from the shoulders of the people within 180 days in office.
Without mincing words, before Governor Mbah took charge of affairs at the state's seat of power, the Lion Building, residents of the state encountered unexplainable difficulties in sourcing for water for domestic and other chores at all seasons of the year but most especially, during the dry season.
This disturbing and ugly scenerio continued for years without any end in sight until the Governor stepped in with his re- engineering and re-setting mechanism for the sector, which today has lightened the face of the people.
The experiences of yester years in accessng good and drinkable water in Enugu is to say the least, heart breaking especially when placed against the fact that majority of the people relied on hand dug water wells, shallow streams, commercial water tankers and barrow pushers to secure water for their homes and offices.
It becomes more pitiable when one remembers that the unhealthy nature of accessing water from these sources, exposes the people especially pregnant women and children to life threatening diseases like typhoid and other water borne illnesses.
Do one also recount the daily long and endless hours of search for water by the people, especially at the peak of each dry season with accompanying lengthy queues that creates the scenerio of citizens waiting for relief materials in crisis ridden areas.
It is this disturbing pictures that Governor Mbah has repainted with the restoration of steady water supply to the residents of Enugu State.
More heart warming about the new Enugu state government's water supply scheme is that, it ensures twenty four hours uninterrupted water to homes, a development that will make the people to quickly forget the days of the locust in water supply in the state.
A testimony to this is the fact that the present public water system in the state has installed capacity to generate 120 million cubic liters of water per day which is more than enough for the daily water need of the people.
However, there is a deliberate plan to supply only 70 million of this to the residents in order to guard against incidents that could lead to bursting and damaging of water distribution facilities.
Aside from this, the government has innovatively constructed water stands in strategic locations in various parts of the state to take care of shortage in water supply structure and ensure that all the citizens benefit from the water scheme.
Also in the offing, is the plan to build a strategic buffer of 80 million cubic liters of water capacity as a stop gap in case of sudden system failure or collapse that might arise from breakdown of pumps or other technicalities.
It is therefore, this massive structure designed and executed purposely for people's interest and comfort that Governor Peter Mbah will cut the red tape on Saturday November 25,2023 9th Mile Enugu.
Instructively, 9th Mile is one of the biggest industrial and commercial hubs of Enugu State, with the South East housing many drinks and beverage manufacturing outfits that make huge use of water in their production; this can be described as a marvelous and lasting gift to people in a Christmas season.
