Many Nigerians share the common belief that January is the toughest and longest month. Over the years, people have frequently lamented about the challenges and difficulties associated with the month of January.
However, according to the Gregorian calendar, there are six months with 31 days, like January; they are March, May, July, August, October, and December.
So why do Nigerians describe January as the longest month? Perhaps due to the financial strain caused by the festivities and financial commitments in December. The celebratory spending during the Yuletide season often makes it challenging to meet various demands, including rent payments, school fees, and other pressing financial needs in the new year.
In January, it is common to see people who struggle with meeting financial obligations, often attributing the challenges to the perceived difficulty of the month.

Miss Racheal Nwoke, a fabric vendor in Wuse market, Abuja, described January as the month with lowest patronage.
”Many people don spend money for December; who wan buy cloth now? na school fees, people dey find,” she said.
Another business owner, Ejike Anyanwu, who sells curtains in the same market, expressed his frustration at staying at home due to the slow sales associated with January.
Ejike said, “Market no dey for January, everybody knows. You no see as Market dry, I suppose dey village now but I no fit go as transport too cost,”‘
For a School Proprietor, Mr SIlas Yilman, he countered the claim that January is tough month but a time to plan ahead for the new year.
According to Mr Yilman, those who deem January the toughest are individuals who failed to plan adequately and engaged in unnecessary spending during the Yuletide season.
“January, to me, is an opportunity to plan for the rest of the year and steps to achieve my set goals. Some parents are in habit of owing school fees because they have spent heavily on the festivities,” he maintained.
A Civil Servant, Mrs Bisola Adeniyi, described January as an exceptionally long month, attributing it to the substantial bills that typically accumulate during this period.
“Most civil servants can’t wait for the month to end, so salary can be paid, it is expected of January, bills have compounded, not even now that we are spending so much on fuelling cars, half of the meagre salary has gone to cars; it’s really unfortunate,” she said.
Applying scale of preference while spending during the Yuletide
During the Yuletide, significant funds are typically allocated for celebrations, including expenses for food, clothing, shoes, and various other items.
However, according to Mrs. Zainab Ilori, a lecturer at Osun State University and financial expert, January shouldn’t be perceived as a tough month if Nigerians prioritise their scale of preference when spending.
”Nigerians should learn to list their wants in order of their importance or priority. Is clothing for the new year more important to you than your children’s school fees or paying rent? Some are stuck in the village because they don’t have the finance to return to their cities of residence,” she emphasised.
”We need to be more realistic; Nigerians enjoy lavish spending and show off. They prefer to party. Why should January be different from other months? It is because we don’t plan. Well, it is evident that Nigeria’s economy currently is not favourable, but did you see the way people partied during the Yuletide? I was wondering where they got money from,” she said.
“January shares the same days with March, May, July, August, October and December, and to the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever complained that any of those months is the longest,” Mrs. Ilori added.
Mrs. Ilori further advised Nigerians to apply caution when spending limited resources and always allow scale of preference to come into play in their activities.
While December is characterised by high end-of-year spending, it is equally important for Nigerians to consistently distinguish between their needs and wants when making financial decisions to avoid ‘January dryness.’
