Famous British statesman Edmund Burke was on marble to have said: "the day we tolerate and overlook evil is the day we betray our own humanity." Today, this quote is unfortunately being fulfilled in Enugu, as the government suffers vilification of the 'masses' in its effort to make the state safe for the citizenry.
The popular skit maker monikered "Untouchable" has come out to "touch" the holy grail of public truth, but instead of cautioning him, his army of followers in the social media baracks are giving air to the fire of half truths he ignited. It is not surprising anyway, for majority of those who inhabit that virtual part of the world have fragile emotions.
Untouchable tried to incite world against Enugu State Government by alleging that it has embarked on massive demolition of houses at Centenary City Estate. This was half truth, as he failed to highlight the reasons behind government's action. He also failed to tell the world that what he had in his hands as certificate of occupancy (C of O) in the video was mere "Deeds of assignment" between him and the estate land seller, and not any authorization document from the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).
His panic call threw Enugu into turmoil. He handed a cocked gun to a motley of naysayers who had been waiting for a slip from Government to press the trigger. And as some people swarmed through the frenzy, many waited for government response before they could pass judgement in the Court of public opinion. As a responsive government, whose ears are with the people, it didn't take long before it responded.
The ubiquitous Commissioner for Information and Communication — Mr. Aka Eze Aka was on hand at the estate site to give a firsthand clarification on what was the true situation of the whole thing. Another relevant official — Mr. Uche Anya who superintends the ECTDA corroborated Aka's elucidatory. The press conference was what critics needed to arrive at a balanced conclusion of reality on ground.
Meanwhile, within 24 hours of the release of his misleading video clip, Untouchable made a detour with another video in which he blamed himself to have acted out of emotions.
The "disclaimer" video took the guns (as it were) from the irredentist few who had been releasing sporadic shots in the air to gaslight the people into believing that Gov. Peter Mbah's administration is on a self-seeking mission.
However, as the fuss dies down we have a lot of lessons to derive from the unfortunate situation. First, we should appreciate the forthrightness of Governor. He never allows any dummy of misconceptions sold to the public to take root among them before he clears the air. That's one hallmark of a Shepherd that smells like the sheep. His nearness to the people is second to none.
We should also acknowledge his firmness in executing his set agenda for Enugu of tomorrow today. He vowed to give back an Enugu that is safe for investment to its rightful owners — Ndi Enugu. An Enugu free of miscreants and insecurity — an Enugu that has its calendar week complete. He rose against Monday sit-at-home plague. Closet apostles of the unholy enterprise fought it, but in the end his order prevailed. Today, his security surveillance machinery discover a hideout of kidnappers in the said estate, and through ECTDA apprehended the suspects and pulled down the illegitimate structure. Untouchable's first video came to dissuade the people, and cause disaffection; but here we are, within few hours everything is under control, and we got the true picture. Mbah's policy on security and investment attraction continues.
He is one resolute leader bookmakers cannot misrepresent easily. He promised to gift water to Ndi Enugu within 180 days. Water has been an essential commodity that has suffered the culture of scarcity in the state for more than half century. For the fear of not meeting his own deadline, he delivered it in 167 days. Like Angelo Roncalli who ruled the Church as Pope John XXIII, when he was mocked that he cannot start an ecumenical council (Vatican II) within his deadline of 1964, opened it in 1963 instead, Mbah was always ahead of his critics.
What a time to be alive in Enugu!
The third lesson is what I call "tyranny of the few." It is a reccuring decimal in our world, that a group of individuals will spring up and hold an immense power, often to the detriment of others. One example that comes to mind is the French Revolution. Few persons (with undefined course) aroused the masses. And driven by their fervor for 'change,' rose up to overthrow the monarchy and the aristocracy. However, in the process, they resorted to perversion of facts, violence, fear, and oppression, leading to what was called a new form of tyranny. This is a stark reminder of how the collective power of the masses can sometimes lead to unintended consequences and a different kind of oppression. It's a cautionary tale that continues to resonate through the ages.
Between 19th and 21st January 2024, the tyranny of the few sprang up in Enugu. But thanks to Mbah's purposeful leadership, it was toppled. Many have unjustly indicted the administration without the legal axiom of "audi alterem partem" (listening to the other party) in the whole quagmire.
The fourth lesson is that what happened is the restitution we pay for lost values. Since the arrival of 21st century, security has been elusive to the world, especially the third world countries, with Nigeria being hit more. Consequently, with the passage of time, the value of human life deterioratesld progressively.
This explains why nobody is giving hoot to the revelation made about the kidnappers hideout and suspects arrested. In the same story of the Centenary City Estate, some of our people gave a selective admittance to the "government demolition saga" while they neglected the security report of the estate being a crime scene. It's the price we pay for allowing the culture of crime cheapen our lives.
Finally, we saw in this episode, need to reinstate that Peter Mbah was not making Enugu safe for illegal investment. His "come home and invest in Enugu" invitation to Ndigbo in diaspora was not meant for fraudsters parading as comedians by day and "Yahoo-Plus" by night. Cybercriminals will find it hot under his watch. Kidnappers should consider repenting or relocating. Why I had to say this is because Untouchable in his video said: "come home and invest... we have come and you are demolishing our investment." Let the record be set straight: Mbah, despite his burning desire for economic boom in the state, cannot be blackmailed into allowing Enugu become a haven for illegitimate business.
May Enugu succeed!
