Some stakeholders in South-East have attributed the increasing insecurity across the zone to irresponsive leadership and high rates of youth unemployment.
Some of them who spoke during the 2023 South East Youth Summit in Enugu, tagged; "the Good Citizen", added that unless something urgent was done to terminate the ugly trend, the youths would continue to wreak havoc in the region.
Renowned scholar and Director, Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Prof. Sam Amadi, who attributed the aggravated insecurity in the south east to lack of social trust and irresponsive leadership, stressed that the effect had disoriented youths towards violence and heinous crimes.
Amadi said that the Nigerian youths resort to self help due to lack of sense of belonging, stereotype and negligence by government in ensuring the social and economic welfare of youths.
The Director proposed the establishment of South East security and economic council, Eastern Security outfit, and quality leadership as solution to insecurity in the region.
While describing security as one of the critical drivers of development, he said politicians took advantage of the poor economic situation to lure youth into crime by using them as mercenaries in achieving selfish political ambitions.
In a keynote address, the Enugu state Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, noted that drug abuse, unemployment often account for majority of crimes committed by young persons.
The Commissioner, therefore, charged youths to engage responsibly in agitating for their rights by conducting themselves well with a sense of purpose in order to achieve their goal.
He stressed that parents play a critical role in the reorientation youths towards sustainable development.
Former Minister of State Mine and Steel Development, Hon. Uche Ogah, charged Igbo youths to get involved in the social and economic development of the south east region.
While commending the organisers of the event, he said that the event was imperative to recalibrate the security architecture of the region for sustainable growth, and encouraged Igbos in hinterland to bring their investments back home.
The Enugu state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, advocated for change from kinetic approach to social security by creating job opportunities for teeming unemployed youths.
In his remark the convener of the 2023 Youth Summit, Hon. Monday Diamond said that the quest for a better Nigeria was a collective responsibility of all Nigerians especially the youths, pointing out that the event was imperative to reorientate youths on the need to think towards the development of the nation.
Highlight of the summit was the presentation of fifty thousand naira to 6 persons, and other prices to participants who participated in the raffle draw.
The event featured panel sessions and was graced by spiritual and royal fathers, Igbo leaders, civil society organisations, representatives of EFCC, NDLEA, Civil Defence, Customs, among other notable personalities.
