The Enugu State Young Farmers Association (ENSYFA) in partnership with Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, weekend, took its sack farming campaign to Christ The King Parish (CKP) Ngwo Uno.
The initiative is aimed at educating the people on latest farming techniques using sacks to promote sustainable agriculture and self-sufficiency.
One such technology is bag culture, also referred to as sack farming.
The technology can be used to cultivate vegetables such as carrots, cucumber and even tubers like yarm and potatoes.
The awareness campaign movement saw a large turnout of parishioners, encompassing both young and old members of the community.
The Parish Priest of Christ The King Parish, Revered Father Chijioke Eze, commended the organisers, and encouraged parishioners to take advantage of the opportunity to acquire the new method of farming.
Father Eze added his voice to the initiative by sharing his personal experience with sack farming.
He showcased his large fish pond and garden, consisting of around 100 sacks used to cultivate vegetables and other crops. He pledged to monitor the progress of his parishioners, promising to visit their homes to ensure they implemented the knowledge acquired during the programme.
Earlier, Kenneth Eze, the President of ENSYFA, who led the session, emphasized the importance of utilizing waste for productive purposes, urging participants to replant food scraps instead of discarding them.
He demonstrated how to grow various plants using sacks, showcasing samples of ugu, pepper, scent leaf, curry leaf, and water leaf.
Eze noted that parts of the fruits and vegetables, such as the head of a pineapple or yam, could be replanted to produce new crops.
He encouraged the community to adopt sack farming to become self-sufficient, stressing that it allowed for easy cultivation of crops close to their homes.
The ENSYFA president, collated the database of interested farmers from Ngwo, with the view to supporting and monitoring their progress.
He said that this initiative was in line with the ambition of the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to drive the GDP of the state from $4.4b to $30B.
He said he is a firm believer that space saving agriculture can help reduce food inflation in Nigeria if homes adopted it in large scale.
He thanked the Governor and also the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, for the good works being carried out.
The programme concluded with question-and-answer session, where participants sought clarification on areas they have doubts and seek further guidance.
Eze said, "the enthusiasm and positive feedback from the attendees were palpable, with many expressing their excitement and commitment to starting their own sack farms.
"The Sack Farming Awareness Programme at Christ The King Parish Ngwo Uno was a resounding success. It not only provided valuable knowledge and practical skills to the community but also fostered a spirit of sustainability and self-reliance.
ENSYFA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, has continued to champion innovative agricultural practices that benefit both individuals and the broader community.
