The Enugu Diaspora Organisation (EDO), has urged Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu to encourage quick passage of Diaspora Commission bill to help his government attract diaspora investment to Enugu.
Kenneth Udichi, the President of EDO, made the appeal during the Gala/Award Night held at Nike Lake Resort Hotel, on Friday in Enugu.
Udichi said the bill, was there few months before Mbah was elected Governor of Enugu State, adding that the bill was now before his office through the Attorney General of the State Office.
He added that the bill if passed would be part of the tools the governor need to work with, in harnessing the Diaspora interest in investment with Enugu State.
According to him, the Diaspora Commission Bill was a selfless effort put together, to encourage their members in Diaspora to be part of the new Enugu State and if properly managed, will attract a lot of overseas investment, into the state.
"We will appreciate His Excellency to encourage a quick passage of the Bill," he said.
He explained that EDO came into being as a result of the love former Governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, had for brothers in the Diaspora, and those who were in the Diaspora, now back home with a lot to offer.
The president said Chime's administration realized early enough that the mindset of those who had spent time in the Diaspora, was different from other brothers and sisters who had not spent time abroad to assimilate the culture of getting things done.
This culture, he said, was centered around hard work, quick understanding and implementation of any work assigned to an individual.
"That innovative idea of Chime's government, as regards working with those with the Diaspora experience changed Enugu State.
"Enugu as a city became the center of attraction and the hospitality industry never had it so good, from Thursday to Sunday, all the hotels at the heart of Enugu City were fully booked, general security and street lights, turned Enugu nightlife to one of the best in the region," he said
He stressed that the moment Diaspora both home and abroad noticed that Chime, who they referred as a man in love with the Diaspora was campaigning for Mbah openly, even when they were from different political parties, it was seen as a clear case of John the Baptist and Christ.
"Everything was done by the Diaspora in every little way they can, for the emergence of Mbah and Mbah is not only in love with the Diaspora but a Diaspora himself.
"He is man of big vision, equally matched with an uncommon innovative spirit. His records before being elected as Governor Enugu State, says it all.
"It is clear today that the years when Enugu city use to be the place to go is back, except that this time the State is targeting a GDP of 40Billion dollars, which we believe will be realized given the current speed of the conqueror Governor.
"Enugu Diaspora Organization (EDO)will convince our colleagues in Diaspora, to invest in Enugu State Government through bond instruments," he urged them
He added that, "I want to assure you that the reaching out to the Diaspora is ongoing through Enugu Diaspora Organization, we are answering their hard questions, and assuring them that any investment in the Government of Enugu State, will be a solid one.
"It might be nice if His Excellency, can say a few things on areas where the Diaspora will be accommodated in the new Enugu City in terms of investment, or acquisition of land for immediate development.
"Finally, I want to thank His Excellency Dr. Peter Mbah for finding the time to lay the foundation of the Diaspora Conference Center earlier in the day," Udichi said.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of award to some indigenes of Enugu, including the Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Osita Ngwu, Vice Chancellor, Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke; Chancellor, Coal City University (COOU) Sir Dr. Chinedu Ani.
Others are, the former General Manager (GM) Enugu State Housing Development Corporation, Chukwuemelie Lambert Agu; a Professor of Digital Economy and Innovation, Chinedu Ochinanwata; a popular Enugu traffic warden, Sgt. Eze Peter; Dr. Cosmas Agu; and a staff with Enugu State Ministry of Transport (MOT) Ezeh Sunday Chukwu Akpu.
