The Emeritus Archbishop, Enugu Ecclesiastical Province, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, the Most. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, has called for a national day of prayer for forgiveness and thanksgiving for the Civil War genocide in Nigeria.
Chukwuma made the call while speaking with newsmen immediately after his 70th birthday celebration on Monday in Enugu.
The clergyman said, "As I celebrate my birthday today Jan. 15, I am filled with emotion to call upon Nigerians and governments to declare a day of thanksgiving and forgiveness for the Civil War and Genocide that happened in Asaba, Delta State and the whole of Igboland during the Nigeria Civil War."
The Emeritus Archbishop added that Nigerians could not forget the war, without looking back to what happened in eastern Nigeria and Asaba where there were genocide and killings and destruction of property.
According to the cleric, if not God, Igbos would not have survived the civil war.
He said that the country was still experiencing killings and other vices because the citizens had not thanked God and prayed for cleansing over the atrocities of the war.
"It is only when we do this, that God will bless us as he blessed Noah. When God destroyed the entire world with water and allowed it to scumble, Noah gathered the people and thanked God and God blessed Noah and promised never to destroy the world with water.
"So if Nigeria do that, the country will be safe from destruction from wars and it's challenges will cease and country will be blessed," he suggested.
