The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has said that the ban on the sale and unauthorized use of fireworks, commonly called “knockout” or “banger,” in the state subsists.
To this end, the command has emphasized that violators would be made to face the full weight of the law.
The Police in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, highlighted the dangers associated with letting off fireworks.
According to the statement, criminals could use it to perfect their criminal intentions, creating tension, and the general hazards igniting fireworks could pose to human life and property, due to their high tendency to cause bodily injuries and fire outbreaks, especially in this harmattan season.
"The CP, therefore, warns dealers and users of fireworks to desist forthwith.
He also cautions parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from buying and igniting fireworks, emphasizing that violators would be made to face the full weight of the law.
"Consequently, the Commissioner has ordered all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units of the Command, to ensure that the ban is enforced to the letter. He also orders them to put in place watertight security in their areas of responsibility this Yuletide, warning that security breaches of any form in their areas of coverage would not be tolerated.
"The CP wishes the citizens of Enugu State a merry Christmas and a fruitful New Year ahead, while urging them to remain law-abiding, vigilant and promptly report criminals and their activities to the nearest Police Station.
